In one of the strangest lottery winner stories of 2017, Marie Segal from Warrington has managed to win a six-bedroom property known as Melling Manor after spending just £20 entry tickets.

The unique raffle was the brainchild of Melling Manor owners Dunstan Low and his wife Natasha Doboz.

After struggling to maintain the mortgage repayments on their luxury property, the couple decided that selling up was the only option. However, after failing to secure an offer large enough to cover their debt, Low decided to set-up a prize draw and sell tickets for £2 each.

Interest in the project quickly caught on and by the time a winner was drawn on August 15, the 37-year-old advertising executive had raised £998,518. Talking to the Telegraph Money, Low explained that the money raised would cover the cost of the property as well as the winner’s legal fees and stamp duty.

Following up, the winner explained that the most she’d ever won on a lottery in the past was £9.

“I’m in shock. I’m speechless. I’ve never won anything before. This is completely surreal,” said Segal.

Elba in First Look at Molly’s Game

In other UK betting news this week, English actor Idris Elba has had his first public outing in the much anticipated poker movie, Molly’s Game. Elba is starring alongside the likes of Jessica Chastain, Chris O’Dowd, Kevin Costner and Michael Cera in the biopic of Molly Bloom.

Bloom is a self-styled poker princess who became infamous after her book, Molly’s Game, detailed the exploits of Hollywood’s most exclusive poker games. After her career as a professional skier ended, she found her way to becoming the go-to woman for poker games involving the rich and famous.

However, after issues with the FBI, she was forced to abandon her business and the rest, as they say, is history.

The first official trailer (see below) for Molly’s Game was released on August 15 ahead of its maiden screen at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. As well as giving us a taste of what we can expect when it hits move theatres in late November, we get to see Elba doing his thing as Bloom’s attorney.

Prior to filming Molly’s Game, Elba was rumoured to be the next James Bond. However, with Daniel Craig confirming that he’ll assume the special agent’s guise one final time, critics will be able to judge Elba on his performance as the man who helped one of poker’s most intriguing figures.
