As the eyes of the world watched the two high profile fighters square off on August 26, bookies across the country were tallying up their bets. According to Bet Bonus Code, the UK’s leading betting sites saw £250+ million wagered on the contest.

Long Odds Attract Punters

Speaking to the Daily Star, a spokesperson for the company noted that Leicester City’s infamous Premier League win during the 2015/2016 season has renewed interest in long odds betting.

“Interestingly, ever since Leicester’s legendary Premier League win back in 2016, long odds amounts to about 28% of sports betting over all. That incredible win obviously reignited hope that anyone stands a chance,” said the spokesperson.

This interest in underdogs potentially causing an upset translated in a lot of action on the Mayweather/McGregor fight. In among the betting action for Mayweather vs. McGregor, one punter reportedly lost £100,000 after putting his faith in the latter.

Despite being a boxing novice, Ireland’s McGregor saw his prefight odds come down from 28/1 with some bookmakers to around 4/1 just hours before the fight. With fans believing McGregor’s mixed martial arts (MMA) skills would give him an unpredictable edge on the more experienced Mayweather, millions in bets came pouring in for the UFC champion.

However, that belief didn’t translate into success for McGregor as he was stopped in the 10th round after the referee called time on the fight.

Highs and Lows of Mayweather vs. McGregor

That result cost at least one UK fan £100,000, but it did net another £500,000 according to the analysts at Bet Bonus Code. After placing a £20,000 bet on Mayweather to win by the tenth round, the lucky punter scooped half a million, which was one of the largest single amounts won on the fight.

Indeed, prior to the opening round, the Maloof brothers, Gavin and Joe, famously bet $880,000/£682,000 on Mayweather to win. Wanting to support their local fighter, the Las Vegas residents placed the bet at South Point Casino and vowed to donate the $160,000/£124,000 profit to charity.

However, even after staking such a large amount, the brothers weren’t able to win as much as the mystery bettor from the UK.

Despite the unnamed bookmaker having to payout such a large prize, the event will be hailed as a success for betting companies. With such a large amount being placed on McGregor at long odds, a win for the Irishman would have cost operators across the country a lot of money.

That didn’t happen, however, which means Mayweather and bookies in the UK came out as the biggest winners from the high profile boxing match.
